Participle Clauses: Present and Past Participles
Participle clauses make sentences shorter and more formal.
Present participle (-ing)
Active meaning (the subject does the action):
“Walking home, I met an old friend.” (While I was walking home…)
“Being tired, I went to bed early.” (Because I was tired…)
Past participle (-ed / irregular)
Passive meaning (the subject receives the action):
“Exhausted by the long journey, he fell asleep.” (Because he was exhausted…)
“Given more time, I could have done better.” (If I had been given more time…)
Examples
- “Arriving late, I missed the bus.” (Because I arrived late…)
- “Seen from above, the city looks beautiful.” (When it is seen from above…)
- “Having finished dinner, we went for a walk.” (After we had finished…)
