Imperatives: Commands and Instructions

The imperative is used to give orders, instructions, advice or requests.

Form

Base verb without ‘to’: “Come here.” / “Sit down.” / “Open your book.”

Negative: Don’t + base verb: “Don’t run.” / “Don’t be late.”

Polite: “Please sit down.” / “Could you open the door, please?”

Uses

• Instructions: “Mix the flour and eggs.” / “Cut the vegetables.”
• Orders: “Stop talking!” / “Listen carefully.”
• Advice: “Eat healthy food.” / “Drink more water.”
• Requests: “Pass me the salt, please.”

Exercise

Write imperatives:

3. ___ (be) quiet!
