Although / Even though + clause

“Although it rained, we went out.”

“Even though he was tired, he finished the work.” (even though = stronger)

Despite / In spite of + noun / V-ing

“Despite the rain, we went out.”

“In spite of feeling tired, he continued working.”

However / Nevertheless (linking words)

“It was raining. However, we went out.”

“He was tired. Nevertheless, he finished the work.”

While / Whereas (direct contrast)

“I like coffee, while my sister prefers tea.”

“She’s tall, whereas her brother is short.”
