Relative Clauses with Prepositions

In formal English, prepositions can come before relative pronouns in relative clauses.

Formal Structure

Preposition + whom (people) / which (things).

• The person to whom I spoke was very kind.
• The house in which I live is old.
• The student about whom you were talking is here.

Informal Structure

The preposition stays at the end of the clause, and the relative pronoun can be omitted.

• The person I spoke to was very kind.
• The house I live in is old.

Whose with Prepositions

The man whose car was stolen reported it to the police.
