Expressing Opinion: In My Opinion, I Think, I Believe
Being able to express your opinion is an essential skill for the BAC exam, especially in the written expression section. This lesson covers the vocabulary and structures you need.
Ways to Express Your Opinion
Strong opinion:
– I strongly believe that…
– I am convinced that…
– There is no doubt that…
– I firmly think that…
– It is obvious that…
Neutral opinion:
– In my opinion…
– I think that…
– I believe that…
– From my point of view…
– As far as I am concerned…
– It seems to me that…
Hesitant opinion:
– I might be wrong but…
– Perhaps/Maybe…
– I am not sure but…
– It could be argued that…
Agreeing and Disagreeing
Agreeing: I agree (completely), You’re right, That’s true, Absolutely, Exactly, I share your view.
Disagreeing: I disagree, I don’t think so, I’m afraid I can’t agree, That’s not the case, I see things differently.
Structuring Your Argument
When writing an opinion paragraph: Introduction (state your opinion) → Body (give reasons and examples) → Conclusion (restate your opinion). Use connectors: Firstly, Secondly, Moreover, Furthermore, However, On the other hand, In conclusion.
Practice Exercise
Exercise: Write a paragraph expressing your opinion on one of these topics (150 words):
1. Should students wear school uniforms?
2. Is social media good or bad for teenagers?
3. What is the importance of learning English?
