Types of Sentences: Simple, Compound, Complex
Understanding sentence structure is essential for good writing. This lesson covers the three main types of sentences in English.
Simple Sentences
A simple sentence has one independent clause: subject + verb + (object/complement).
Examples: “I study English.” / “She reads books.” / “The sun rises in the east.”
A simple sentence expresses one complete thought.
Compound Sentences
A compound sentence has two or more independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction (FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so).
Examples: “I wanted to go, but I was tired.” / “She studied hard, so she passed the exam.”
Use a comma before the conjunction.
Complex Sentences
A complex sentence has one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses, joined by a subordinating conjunction (because, although, while, when, if, since, unless, etc.) or a relative pronoun (who, which, that).
Examples: “Although it was raining, I went to school.” / “The book that I read was interesting.”
If the dependent clause comes first, use a comma.
Compound-Complex Sentences
A compound-complex sentence has two or more independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses.
Example: “Although I was tired, I studied hard, and I passed the exam.”
