Present Perfect vs Past Simple: Differences and Usage

In this lesson, we study Present Perfect vs Past Simple in English for 2nd Year Secondary School (Literary Stream). These two tenses are often confused by learners.

Past Simple

• Used for completed actions at a specific time in the past.
• Signal words: yesterday, last week, in 2020, ago.
• Example: I visited Paris last year.

Present Perfect

• Used for past actions connected to the present.
• Signal words: ever, never, just, already, yet, since, for.
• Example: I have visited Paris.

Key Differences

Past Simple	Present Perfect
I saw that film yesterday.	I have seen that film.
She lived in London for 5 years. (finished)	She has lived in London for 5 years. (continues)
He left 10 minutes ago.	He has just left.

Exercises
