Greetings and Introductions: Formal and Informal
Knowing how to greet people and introduce yourself correctly is the first step to speaking English confidently. This lesson covers greetings and introductions in both formal and informal contexts.
Formal Greetings
- Good morning / Good afternoon / Good evening (formal, polite)
- How do you do? (very formal – reply with “How do you do?”)
- Pleased to meet you. / It is a pleasure to meet you.
Informal Greetings
- Hello! / Hi! / Hey!
- How are you? / How is it going? / What is up?
- Good to see you! / Long time no see!
Introducing Yourself
- Formal: “Good morning. My name is Ahmed. I am a student at your school.”
- Informal: “Hi, I am Sara. Nice to meet you!”
Introducing Others
- This is my friend, Ali.
- I would like you to meet Mr Smith.
- Have you met Fatima? She is in my class.
Responses
- Nice to meet you too. / Likewise.
- The pleasure is mine. / Happy to meet you.
Exercises
