Past Perfect Continuous

The Past Perfect Continuous emphasizes the duration of an action that happened before another past action.

Formation

Subject + had + been + V-ing: I had been studying for hours when the lights went out.

Uses

• Duration before a past event: They had been waiting for 2 hours when the bus arrived.
• Cause in the past: She was tired because she had been working all day.
