Articles in English: A, An, The
Articles are small but important words in English. They come before nouns and help specify whether we are talking about something specific or general. There are two types: indefinite articles (a, an) and the definite article (the).
The Indefinite Article: A / An
We use “a” and “an” with singular countable nouns when we mention something for the first time or when it is not specific.
- A is used before words beginning with a consonant sound: a book, a car, a university (sound “yu”), a European country.
- An is used before words beginning with a vowel sound: an apple, an hour (silent “h”), an honest person, an umbrella.
The Definite Article: The
We use “the” when:
- The noun is specific or already mentioned: I saw a dog. The dog was brown.
- There is only one in existence: the sun, the moon, the Earth, the President.
- Superlatives and ordinal numbers: the best student, the first lesson, the highest mountain.
- Before unique things: the internet, the environment, the government.
- With musical instruments: play the piano, play the guitar.
- With nationality groups: the French, the Algerians, the English.
Zero Article (No Article)
We do not use an article when:
- Speaking about things in general: Books are important. (not “The books are important” in general sense)
- Before proper nouns: Algeria, Algiers, Mohamed.
- Before meals: have breakfast, eat lunch, have dinner.
- Before sports and games: play football, play chess.
- Before languages: speak Arabic, learn English.
- Before some places: go to school, go to bed, go to hospital (for purpose).
