The Past Perfect Continuous Tense
The Past Perfect Continuous (also called Past Perfect Progressive) describes an action that was in progress before another action in the past. It emphasizes the duration of the earlier action.
Formation
Subject + had been + verb-ing
Examples: “I had been studying for two hours when she arrived.” “They had been waiting for 30 minutes before the bus came.”
Uses
- To show an action that was in progress before another past action: “She was tired because she had been working all day.”
- To explain a past result: “He failed the exam because he hadn’t been studying enough.”
- With duration words (for, since, all day, etc.): “We had been travelling for 12 hours when we finally arrived.”
Comparison: Past Perfect vs Past Perfect Continuous
