The Past Perfect Tense

The past perfect tense is used to describe an action that happened before another action in the past. Structure: HAD + past participle.

Formation

Subject	had	Past Participle	Example
I / You / He / She / It / We / They	had	finished / gone / seen	I had finished my work.

Uses

1. Action before another past action:
   “When we arrived, the movie had already started.” (First the movie started, then we arrived.)
2. Cause in the past:
   “She was tired because she had worked all day.”
3. Reported speech (backshift):
   Direct: “I have finished.” → Reported: He said he had finished.
4. Third conditional (unreal past):
   “If I had known, I would have helped.”

Time expressions with past perfect

• Already, just, never, ever, yet: “She had already left when I called.”
• Before, after, when, until, by the time: “By the time we arrived, they had eaten everything.”
• For, since: “He had lived there for ten years before he moved.”

Past Perfect vs Past Simple

• Past Simple = a past action (in chronological order). “I ate dinner, then I watched TV.”
• Past Perfect = the earlier action. “I had eaten dinner before I watched TV.”
