Polite Requests: Can, Could, May
We use modal verbs for polite requests. Can is informal. Could is more formal. May is very formal.
Can
Informal: “Can you help me?” “Can I borrow your pen?”
Could
More formal: “Could you open the door?” “Could I use your phone?”
May
Very formal: “May I come in?” “May I ask a question?”
Responses
Positive: “Of course.” “Certainly.” “Sure.” Negative: “I am sorry, I cannot.”
Exercises
- Make polite requests: “I want water” > “Could I have water?”
