Grammar: The Zero and First Conditional

Conditional sentences express a condition and its result. The Zero and First Conditionals are fundamental structures in English grammar for Baccalaureate students in the literary stream.

Zero Conditional

Form: If + present simple, present simple

Use: For general truths, facts, and habits – things that are always true.

• If you heat water to 100°C, it boils.
• If I feel tired, I drink a cup of coffee.
• If it rains, the grass gets wet.

First Conditional

Form: If + present simple, will + base verb (or: present simple, will/can/may/might + base verb)

Use: For real or probable situations in the present or future.

• If you study hard, you will pass the exam.
• If it rains tomorrow, we will stay at home.
• If she arrives early, we can start the meeting.

Differences between Zero and First Conditional

Zero Conditional	First Conditional
Always true / General fact	Possible future situation
If you freeze water, it turns into ice.	If you freeze this mixture, it will turn into a solid.
No “will” in the result clause	“Will” or other modal in the result clause

Important Notes

• The comma is used when “if” starts the sentence: If + condition, result
• No comma when the result comes first: Result + if + condition
• We can use “unless” instead of “if not”: Unless you study, you will fail. (= If you don’t study, you will fail.)

Exercises

1. Complete with the correct form: “If you ___ (mix) red and blue, you ___ (get) purple. If she ___ (study) harder, she ___ (pass) the exam. Water ___ (freeze) if the temperature ___ (drop) below 0°C.”
2. Choose Zero or First Conditional: “If I see him, I (tell) him. If you heat ice, it (melt). If we hurry, we (catch) the bus.”
3. Write 3 Zero Conditional and 3 First Conditional sentences about your life.
