Writing a Biography
A biography is the story of a persons life written by someone else. Learning to write a biography helps develop research skills, chronological organization, and descriptive writing abilities.
I. Structure of a Biography
1. Introduction: Who is the person? Why are they important? Include birth date and place.
2. Early Life: Childhood, education, family background, early influences.
3. Career and Achievements: Major accomplishments, key events, significant contributions.
4. Later Life and Legacy: Later years, death (if applicable), and lasting impact.
II. Useful Language for Biographies

III. Example: Biography of Malala Yousafzai
“Malala Yousafzai was born on July 12, 1997, in Mingora, Pakistan. She grew up in a region where girls were often denied education. At the age of 11, she began writing a blog for the BBC about life under Taliban rule. She became an activist for girls education. In 2012, she survived an assassination attempt. After recovering, she continued her activism and became the youngest Nobel Peace Prize laureate in 2014.”
IV. Tips for Writing a Good Biography
- Research thoroughly before writing.
- Organize information chronologically.
- Use a variety of time expressions.
- Include interesting facts and achievements.
- Write in the third person.
- Use past tense for past events.
Exercises
1. Write a short biography (150 words) of a famous Algerian personality.
2. Identify the key structural elements in the Malala example above.
3. Rewrite the Malala paragraph using at least 5 different time expressions.
