Emphasis: Cleft Sentences

Cleft sentences are used to emphasize a particular part of a sentence.

It is/was… that/who…

Normal: “Ahmed broke the window.”

Emphasis on subject: “It was Ahmed who broke the window.” (not someone else)

Emphasis on object: “It was the window that Ahmed broke.” (not something else)

What… is/was…

Normal: “I need a holiday.”

Emphasis: “What I need is a holiday.”

Other emphasis structures

• “All I want is…” = emphasis on only thing
• “The person who…” / “The reason why…” / “The place where…”

Examples

“It was in 2010 that I first visited Paris.” (emphasizing the year)

“What made her happy was the surprise party.” (emphasizing the cause)

“It was because of the rain that the match was cancelled.” (emphasizing the reason)
