Wh-Questions

Question words

• Who (person): Who is he? → He is my teacher.
• What (thing): What is this? → It’s a book.
• Where (place): Where do you live? → I live in Algiers.
• When (time): When is your birthday? → In March.
• Why (reason): Why are you late? → Because I missed the bus.
• How (manner): How do you go to school? → By bus.
• Which (choice): Which colour do you prefer? → Blue.
• Whose (possession): Whose book is this? → It’s Ali’s.
• How many (countable): How many brothers do you have?
• How much (uncountable): How much water do you drink?

Word order

Wh-word + auxiliary + subject + verb: Where do you live?

Wh-word + to be + subject: Who is she?

Exercise

Ask questions for these answers:

1. I’m 12 years old. (How old…)
2. She lives in Oran. (Where…)
3. Because I was sick. (Why…)

present simple and verb to be.
