Prepositions of Movement

Common prepositions

• To: direction (go to school, walk to the park)
• Into: entering (go into the room, jump into the pool)
• Onto: moving to a surface (climb onto the roof)
• Through: passing from one side to another (walk through the forest)
• Across: from one side to the other (swim across the river)
• Up/Down: going up or down (climb up the stairs, run down the hill)
• Along: following a line (walk along the beach)
• Around: moving in a circle (walk around the park)

Examples

“He goes to school by bus.” / “She jumped into the water.”

“We walked through the tunnel.” / “They ran across the bridge.”
