Writing a Book Review: Structure and Useful Phrases

A book review describes and evaluates a book. It helps readers decide whether to read it.

Structure

• Title and Author: Start with the book’s title and author.
• Introduction: Basic info (genre, setting, characters).
• Summary: Brief plot without spoilers.
• Analysis: What you liked/disliked.
• Recommendation: Who would enjoy this book?
• Rating: 1 to 5 stars.

Useful Phrases

Introduction: “The book [title] by

is a [genre].” / “Set in [place], this book tells the story of…”

Positive: “I really enjoyed this book because…” / “The plot is exciting.”

Negative: “I found it a bit slow at times.” / “The ending was predictable.”

Recommendation: “I recommend this book to anyone who likes…”
