اللغة الإنجليزية — Grammar: The Passive Voice (All Tenses) — 2 ثانوي — شعبة آداب — بكالوريا — المنهاج الجزائري

Introduction

The passive voice is an essential grammatical structure in English, especially in academic and formal writing. It allows us to focus on the action or the recipient of the action rather than the doer. In this lesson, we will study how to form the passive voice in all tenses, its uses, and how to convert active sentences to passive.

I. What is the Passive Voice?

In the active voice, the subject performs the action. In the passive voice, the subject receives the action.

Active: The students wrote the essays. (Subject = students, doer of the action)
Passive: The essays were written by the students. (Subject = essays, receiver of the action)

Structure:

Passive = Subject + [to be] + Past Participle (V3) + (by + agent)

II. Formation in All Tenses

Tense Active Passive
Present Simple She writes a letter. A letter is written (by her).
Present Continuous She is writing a letter. A letter is being written (by her).
Present Perfect She has written a letter. A letter has been written (by her).
Past Simple She wrote a letter. A letter was written (by her).
Past Continuous She was writing a letter. A letter was being written (by her).
Past Perfect She had written a letter. A letter had been written (by her).
Future (will) She will write a letter. A letter will be written (by her).
Future (going to) She is going to write a letter. A letter is going to be written (by her).
Modal verbs She must write a letter. A letter must be written (by her).

III. When to Use the Passive Voice

  • When the agent is unknown: “My wallet was stolen.” (We don’t know who stole it)
  • When the agent is obvious: “The criminal was arrested.” (Obviously by the police)
  • When the agent is not important: “The bridge was built in 1990.” (Who built it is not important)
  • In scientific and academic writing: “The experiment was conducted three times.”
  • To be more polite or formal: “Your request has been received.”

IV. Converting Active to Passive

Steps:

  1. Move the object of the active sentence to the subject position in the passive.
  2. Identify the tense of the active verb and use the correct form of “to be”.
  3. Use the past participle (V3) of the main verb.
  4. If needed, add “by + agent” at the end.

Examples:

  • Active: The chef cooks the meal. → Passive: The meal is cooked by the chef.
  • Active: The company will launch a new product. → Passive: A new product will be launched by the company.
  • Active: Scientists have discovered a new planet. → Passive: A new planet has been discovered (by scientists).

V. Exercises

  1. Rewrite the following sentences in the passive voice:
    a) The students read the books.
    b) The government is building a new hospital.
    c) Someone has stolen my car.
    d) The children will finish the project tomorrow.
  2. Transform the following passive sentences to active:
    a) The letter was sent yesterday.
    b) English is spoken in many countries.
  3. Write a short paragraph (80 words) describing a historical event using the passive voice at least three times.

Conclusion

The passive voice is a powerful tool in English grammar, particularly for formal and academic writing. Mastering it will help you express ideas more flexibly and achieve a higher score in your Baccalaureate exam. Practice regularly by transforming sentences and writing paragraphs.
