Writing an Opinion Essay: Expressing and Defending an Opinion

An opinion essay presents and defends your point of view.

Structure

Introduction: Topic, your opinion (thesis).
Body: 2-3 paragraphs with arguments and examples.
Conclusion: Restate opinion, summary.

Useful Expressions

In my opinion, I believe that, From my point of view.
On one hand… On the other hand…
For example, For instance.
Therefore, Consequently, As a result.

Example Topic

“Should students wear uniforms?” State your opinion with 2-3 reasons.

Exercises

1. Write an opinion essay on “Social media is harmful.” (150 words).
2. Use at least 5 expressions from the list.
