Grammar: The Future Continuous Tense

The Future Continuous (also called Future Progressive) is an English verb tense used to describe actions that will be in progress at a specific time in the future. This lesson is designed for 2nd year secondary school students in the Literary Stream, following the Algerian curriculum for the Baccalaureate.

Formation of the Future Continuous

Type Structure Example
Affirmative Subject + will + be + verb(-ing) I will be studying at 8 PM tonight.
Negative Subject + will + not + be + verb(-ing) She will not be coming to the party.
Interrogative Will + subject + be + verb(-ing)? Will you be attending the meeting?

Uses of the Future Continuous

1. Actions in Progress at a Specific Future Time

We use the future continuous to talk about an action that will be happening at a particular moment in the future.

  • This time tomorrow, I will be flying to London.
  • At 9 o’clock tonight, they will be watching the film.
  • Next week at this time, we will be sitting on the beach.

2. Future Actions that are Already Planned

It can express future actions that have been arranged or that are expected to happen as part of a routine.

  • I will be seeing the doctor tomorrow at 10 AM.
  • She will be giving a presentation at the conference.
  • We will be having dinner with friends this evening.

3. Polite Questions about Future Plans

Using the future continuous can sound more polite than the present simple when asking about someone’s plans.

  • Will you be using the car later? (more polite than “Will you use…?”)
  • Will you be needing anything else?

4. Predicting the Present

We can use the future continuous to guess what is happening right now.

  • Don’t call him now; he will be sleeping at this hour.
  • She will be working at her desk right now.
