Grammar: Time Clauses (When, While, As soon as, Until)

This lesson covers Time Clauses, an important grammar topic for second-year literary stream students in the Algerian Baccalaureate programme.

Introduction

Time clauses are used to indicate when something happens. They begin with time words such as when, while, as soon as, until, before, after, as, and since. A time clause has a subject and a verb, but it cannot stand alone — it must be attached to a main clause.

Rules

• Present tense in future time clauses: When the main clause refers to the future, use the present simple (NOT will) in the time clause. Example: I will call you when I arrive. (NOT: when I will arrive)
• Past time clauses: Use past tenses. Example: While I was studying, my brother came home.
• Comma usage: When the time clause comes first, use a comma. Example: As soon as the bell rang, the students left.

Time Words and Their Uses

1. When: Refers to a specific point in time or a general time. When you finish your homework, you can watch TV.
2. While / As: Refers to two actions happening at the same time (duration). While the teacher was explaining, the students were listening carefully.
3. As soon as: Means immediately after. As soon as the exam finished, the students checked their answers.
4. Until / Till: Up to a point in time. Stay here until I come back.
5. Before: Earlier than a point in time. Before you go to bed, brush your teeth.
6. After: Later than a point in time. After the lesson ended, we asked questions.

• When you visit Algeria, you should try couscous.
• While I was reading, my phone rang.
• As soon as the results were announced, the students celebrated.
• Wait until the rain stops before you leave.
• After the BAC results came out, she applied to university.

Baccalaureate Tips

Time clauses often appear in BAC exam exercises on: (1) verb tense correction, (2) sentence combining, and (3) rewriting. Pay attention to the tense shift rule: future in the main clause → present in the time clause.
